Understanding the NDIS Pathway: From Access Request to Plan Reassessment.

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a nationwide disability support scheme funded by the Australian government to help people with disabilities to access the support and services they need to lead independent and fulfilling lives. Resident Australian citizens with significant and permanent disabilities between the ages of 7 and 65 are eligible for applying to be an NDIS participant. Moreover, eligibility extends to permanent residents, individuals with a permanent visa, or those holding a protected special category visa. Eligible people with disabilities can contact their Local Area Coordinator or the local NDIS office to get assistance with finding out their eligibility and filling up the Access Request Form. You also need to submit supporting evidence regarding your disability along with your application
form.

After submitting your access request, the NDIS will let you know about their decision within 21 days. If you are found to be eligible, the next step is to create your NDIS plan. The first step in the planning process is to set up a planning conversation where all your information is reviewed. More importantly, it is an opportunity for you to discuss your goals, expectations and current support networks with the NDIS planner. At this stage, you can also decide how you want to manage your NDIS funding. If you ask for plan management to be
included in your NDIS plan, you will be able to access the services of experts called plan managers who will keep track of your NDIS funding and ensure that your provider invoices are paid on time. After the planning conversation, your plan will be created and submitted to
the NDIA for approval within 21 days. The NDIA can take up to 56 days or more to approve a plan. Upon the approval of your plan, a copy will be provided to you within a period of 7 days. If you are not satisfied with your NDIS plan, you can ask for a plan reassessment.
